“You can’t talk about a great wine without talking about a great terroir. The land is the basis for everything. But one of the most important things is the influence of people – the way we support the vines over a long period of time until we find the expression that identifies us, which we can help turn into something unforgettable.”

Andrés Vignoni, Consultant winemaker of Pinea

The keys of a privileged terroir.

In the south of old Europe, in the historic Spanish region of Castilla y León, lies the Ribera del Duero.

This wonderful land, at an average altitude of 900 metres above sea level, gives us the perfect conditions to create something unforgettable.

General characteristics
A variety of altitudes, slopes and soil textures, from sandy to clayey, but with abundant presence of calcareous content.

Parcels
Nine parcels facing in different directions, with vines of varying ages.

  • At this altitude, the vines benefit from almost 360 degrees of exposure and different rich soil types, generally sandy soils with plenty of limestone
  • These soils and the harsh climate of the area give our grapes and wines a very special personality of their own.
  • Deeply structured rooting systems allow vines to develop under extreme temperatures, without artificial irrigation.
  • The abrupt temperature changes, from cold, snowy winters to very hot summer days, and the huge temperature fluctuation between day and night during the ripening season, make the Pinea Domain a unique place, where the Tempranillo grape expresses its character like nowhere else in the world.

Cardisanto

Altitude: 931 – 942m Area: 10,5 ha Age of the vineyard: 30+ years

Our most special vineyard of all lies to the south of Villatuelda, crossed by the Cardisanto stream, between the Ayosa and Cascajos areas, at an altitude of 931-942 metres above sea level.

Subdivided into five plots (el Barco, la Ladera, los Frutales, Carralagos and La Encina).

The chalky upland soils with limestone pebbles originate in the characteristic bedrock of the area, providing very fine, elegant tannins that appears almost immediately in the wines, during the first tastings of each vintage.

Valdeguzman

Altitude: 835m Area: 1,86 ha Age of the vineyard: 30 years

Our oldest vineyard, Valdeguzman, to the southwest between La Arenera and Carraquintana, overlooks our winery. Here, the grapes develop thick skins as a defence and protection against a climate that is always extreme, producing wines with plenty of muscle and depth.

Las Varillas

Altitude: 874m Area: 9,48 ha Age of the vineyard: 25 years

Facing northwest, between Fuentementero and Calverón, and lying within Olmedillo de Roa, is the vineyard that provides a very special part of our 17 by Pinea. This parcel provides us with concentrated fruit and plenty of freshness, with spicy aromas characteristic of this area.

Las Coronas

Altitude: 862m Area: 4,12 ha Age of the vineyard: 25 years

Each year the south-facing Las Coronas offers us somewhat warm grapes, the result of full exposure to the weather, but with hints of mineralised red fruit. This makes a spectacular contribution to our 17 by Pinea and is the result of our long, hard winters and our characteristic temperature swing.

La Villa

Altitude: 863m Area: 1,75 ha Age of the vineyard: 25 years

Facing east, in Olmedillo de Roa is La Villa, a vineyard with sandy, gravelly soil producing juicy grapes with great aromatic intensity.

Zambrín

Altitude: 865m Area: 1,69 ha Age of the vineyard: 25 years

Cotarro Zambrín is in the municipality of Olmedillo de Roa, on the way to Guzman. It gives its name to an estate from which wine has not yet been made, although its properties are similar to Valdeguzman, where our winery stands.

Fuentevega

Altitude: 850m Area: 3,11 ha Age of the vineyard: 25 years

No wine has yet been made from the southwest facing Fuentevega, alongside the stream that gives it its name, next to the Hornaresas area. With its clay soil, it is one of the parcels that will map the route towards the future at Pinea.

The setting where we make our wines: La Ribera del Duero

  • A unique, complex land. A land of wine, marked by the passage of time and very tough conditions. Ribera del Duero shapes our character and, at the same time, allows us to seek our own essence.
